7 beers on tap including: Gose, IPA, rye IPA, stout, Belgian dubbel and a honey wheat. I had the rye IPA and the stout. Both were well within the style guidelines with no discernable flaws. Our traveling companions split a 7-beer sampler. They were pleased with everything they tried.

Waredaca is located in the middle of a horse farm. Indoor & outdoor seating areas. Very dog and kid friendly. The occasional horseback rider strolls by. They sell meats & cheeses and other pub snacks, but many people brought their own food and just sort of spread out over the available tables. The overall vibe seemed to be young families with kids and dogs.

Full Moon Brewery…..

Well, no.

It’s actually the Lost Colony Brewing…butted up against the Full Moon Cafe.

One and the same.

However, since it’s on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, there are a few distinct rules that apply.

Well, only one….due to the weather, Lost Colony closes down on December 1st!

So get there before!

Because they are offering up some incredible brews.

Wife Persimmon and I did….mid-November in 2016 on our year-long journey across the good ol’ USofA. After a day exploring the lost colony on Roanoke Island, we took a left (instead of a right) and found ourselves in “downtown” Manteo…and the Lost Colony.

At 3:00 in the afternoon, we were the only patrons in the tiny tasting room with Zach, our bartender, clearly saddened by our appearance…since he had just decided to close up for the day when we walked in.

Really glad we did. With a barley wine, a Scot, an Imperial Stout…our dark beer selves were extremely satisfied although Zach was more than ready to head for home after we had imbibed 1.

We let him off the hook, but vowed to return within a year (this time in October for the colors…they were lacking this time around) so we can enjoy whatever dark ales they choose to place in our paths.

The folks long ago in the lost colony may have been forgotten but we have not!

How soft drinks started

Softs have played an important role in society for centuries, but their history and value is too often overlooked. There’s a lot more to soft drinks than first meets the eye.

“Moon River…your beer is not too bad
But it makes sad, to say
One Pale Ale…One Brown Ale
And way too many IPA’s…”

With apologies to songwriter Henry Mancini, Moon River was a convenient stop for our 2-visit to Savannah in November, 2016 as part of a year-long odyssey through the good ol’ USofA.

Convenient in that it was across the street from our hotel…next to JJ’s Beer Bar and Churchill’s and it was late afternoon and we didn’t want to get back in the care to drive even 1 mile to find a place to eat.

Having said all that, Moon River fit the bill perfectly.

With a lovely Tripel on tap, plenty of good Southern cooking (fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs over trout, chicken and sausage creole) wife Persimmon’s taste buds and mine were satisfied.

And, we even got a special entrance to the haunted downstairs. Featured on 2 of the nations’s most watched “haunted” shows (I don’t know what they are because I don’t watch them) it was a cellar full of brick and a bit of wood and it was fascinating to be someplace while the other diners were enjoying their chips and salsa…both inside and outside in the 200+ seat beer garden.

Nevertheless, after a short drive in from Beaufort, South Carolina (40 miles away) on a clear, Fall day…Moon River refreshed.

The service was grand…the food delectable…the Tripel outstanding…the company excellent.

Moon River can’t take all the credit…but it sure was claim part of the prize.

When in North Carolina (for beer geeks), THE place to go is Ashville, in the Western part of the state.

However, since wife Perismmon & I were on the Eastern “coast”, it was not feasible to drive the 350 miles to the one of the alleged Best Beer areas in the good ol’ USofA.

So, for the one night were we there, we headed into downtown Wilmington, to see what we could see.

What we saw was Front Street Brewing, recommended by the young lady at the concierge desk in our hotel.

Let me just say that if I should return to the area, I will spend at least another day (if not 2) if this little, Southern oasis.

Front Street had some OK beers, a a coupla that were outstanding. As a plus, the head brewer (Christoper) offered us a sample of their Tiny Tim 2016 Xmas Ale, not yet ready for consumption (not carbonation) but full of Xmas spirit and vitality. The St. Stans Baltic had an interesting nutty flavor on the back side setting apart from others of the same ilk.

The service was commendable, the atmosphere acceptable (no loud TV’s and music), the food delectable, the beer agreeable.

A block away from the Cape Fear River, I was sorry to have to leave the town after one brief evening. I will come back for certain to re-taste and re-experience Front Street as well as the other breweries / brewpubs in town.

Who needs Charleston?
