It’s a brewpub, yes. It’s a distillery, yes. It’s a delight.
Oh my, yes.
Wife Persimmon, son Lewis and I were exploring Portland with the goal of finding a beer bar #1 son had visited before. We wanted to take pix of the harbor and as we walked, there…in front of us like a golden castle…was Liquid Riot.
Well, we HAD to go in.
Yes, we did.
And we found a delicious atmosphere to soothe a dreary soul on a rainy, cold Maine afternoon. Lots of dark wood, shuffleboard, pool, low music, good conversation….
But the beer?
Well, unfortunately the beer was not the best. A Belgian White Stout was offered which sounded delightful…but failed to impress. More of a Wheat with some subtle coffee under-tones, it did deliver on the promised vanilla flavor but at 5%, was too weak to be considered a stout.
But the service was agreeable and located right on the water, it’s easy to find and a good place to finish up a walk of downtown Portland and all its seaside character.
Next time (and yes, we’ll probably be back in a year) I would truly like to see a more varied tap menu with a coupla of darks (tripel, quad, barley wine) — something to signify that Liquid Riot knows its Fall and I do not…DO NOT…care to sup on yet another IPA.

8 beers on tap: table, pilsner, wit, triple, stout, IPA, DIPA & pumpkin porter. I had the IPA and a stout. Both were good. Our traveling companions split a 7-beer sampler. Brookville is very light on some of the ingredients – the pumpkin porter had a very light pumpkin taste. Very good beers, but not for hop heads. Beautiful country setting. Great outdoor seating area with outdoor bar and heaters. Country store inside selling upscale cheeses & meats. They sell their own pizzas and have a continuing rotation of food trucks. Outside is more like a farmers’ market with other craft & foodie menus. Bales of hay for kids to play on. Overall it’s a strong family vibe.

Wife Persimmon and I, along with our #1 Son Lewis, had occasion to spend the day in Portland Maine in the Fall of November 2016
He had wanted to take us to a beer bar he found a few months prior called Novare Res.
I’m not a fan of such places. They normally tout their incredible selection of brews and, upon entering, I find that the most exquisite and unique beer is something by Stone or Ballast Point Brewing.
Now I’m sure in Portland, Maine…those are highly sought-after items but being from Southern Calfiornia, I’ve had them all and find them all to be way to hoppy (West Coast IPA inspired, whatever the hell that has come to mean) so I was not looking forward to this trip.
Still, #1 son has similar tastes to Persimmon and myself so we indulged his desire.
On the way, we discovered an unknown brewery down by the waterfront. I am always thrilled when I happen upon a new discovery just by chance. However, we didn’t spend much time there and hurried on to our destination.
Novare Res is off the beaten path but apparently beer geeks know and love this place…and I have a sneaking suspicion, you will too.
Their beer “menu” is more a book; 6 pages of everything on tap and in bottles including, yes…Stone and Ballast Point but local brews as well and some from as far off as Norway, which we decided to sample.
Sweet Horizons comes from the frozen north and all 3 of us had had Dark Horizons a few years back (before 2016) at Stone Brewings “Pour It Black” annual fest…and we all immediately swooned. It was thick and full of flavor, viscous on the tongue, lasting on the palate so the idea of having yet another from Nogne Brewing was a no-brainer.
We were not disappointed. Not as sweet as his little brother but bursting with character and flavor.
The bar itself is dark, laid back (#1 son reported that his previous trip including drinking with a few thousand of his closest friends one afternoon…so our “party” this day was a delight with mebbe a half-dozen others ordering and imbibing)…the service was terrific….the snacks were a perfect compliment to the beers.
After a bit more than 2 hours later, Portland had turned dark and cold and we had a 2 hour drive back to the confines of Boston so we had to say adios.
But all of us (and perhaps #2 son as well if we can pull him out of Denver for a week!) will return to see what new offerings the place has.
And maybe do so in the Spring when we can sit outside in their beer “garden.”
Or maybe not.
Doesn’t matter.
Just flip another page, close our eyes, let our fingers scan the page, and wait to drink another amazing brew.

You know what’s fun about finding new breweries / brewpubs?
Being able to share their excellence with others who think like you do…you want to experience the true, blue (brew) essence of good beer, and all that goes with it.
Well Barreled Souls has found “it.”
Whatever “it” is, “it” is here.
Some 20-ish miles south of Portland, Maine…Barreled Souls is hard to find…(and for those of us who want to keep this gems hidden, please don’t try too hard!)…but once you do, you’ll be a convert.
The place looks like someone’s basement….perfect, right? And it is literally in the basement of the building. Maybe a dozen chairs. A bar that might be 10 feet long. Dark. No TV blasting a game. No music blaring. And a good, varied selection of brews from IPA to Barleywines.
And those barley wines?!!!! 13% Apple and Peach. A Scotch ale aged in rum barrels. Bottles available.
Cribbage boards on the over-turned barrel tables.
This is someone’s home and you’ve been invited.
Come in. Be a friend. Don’t be a hard-ass. Breathe. Drink. Enjoy. Relax.
And for God’s sake….don’t tell anyone else!!
