Surly — Adj; bad-tempered, unfriendly.

Probably not the best name for a brewpub. Don’t know about you but I don’t want to anticipate being treated by a surly wait-person as I ask for a favorite brew.

But then when you’ve changed the laws in a state to suit your brewing & beer needs and the desires of your patrons, I suppose you’ve earned the right to puff up your chest and be a bit….well, surly.

But no worries here. The folks at Surly Brewing are as pleasant as can be, even on a cold, windy Minnesota afternoon.

Wife Persimmon & I meet friends for a beer (or 3) on our travels throughout the USofA. Although not beer drinkers, they knew we were and suggested the place.

Sitting outside in the expansive beer “garden” was a bit challenging but the beers warmed us up thoroughly.

15 on tap, a good variety but I was particularly aware of their signature brew; an elusive little darling known as “Darkness.” This is one of those special releases, once every year, that when the day arrives, beer geeks everywhere salivate. However, having been on the road for 2 months, the day had escaped my attention. Not, however, my alert sons who informed me that Darkness was released in October.

As we sipped, I excused myself, jumped online and discovered “the day” was in October…the 15th to be exact which just happened to be…the day before!!!!

Are you kidding?? I missed it by a day??????

Shit.

But the Universe was watching over me and my ex-lawyer friend started asking those lawyer-type questions and determined that, yes indeed…the release day was the day before — however, the bottled Darkness would begin showing up in stores the next morning, Monday. So we downed our Coffee Bender (cold coffee, delicious) and our Witch’s Tower and headed off to St. Paul for dinner.
It was an early night. I had a mission the next day.

We arose at 7:00 am because we had been informed the beer would be arriving when the local liquor store opened at 9:00. Having been at this game for awhile, I knew I needed to be near the front of the anticipated long line. A quick 5-minute drive and we were indeed at the head of the pack….the non-existent pack. “Well,” I thought, “perfect. My bottle is guaranteed.” Then we noticed that the store opened not at 9:00 but 8:00, only moments away. “Hmmmm,” I pondered. “Why are we the only ones here? Don’t Minnesota beer geeks know about this? Or do they have some special pusher-man to home-deliver Darkness?”

Regardles, the doors did indeed open on time at 8:00 but, when asked, the guys said “Nope, no delivery yet.” Damn. “But,” he said, “give me your number & I’ll call you when it arrives.”

Right. Sure you will, I thought but what the hell…couldn’t hurt and who knows, maybe this time…

Long story short; we went to breakfast and almost 4 hours later, my phone rings – it’s Dustin telling me the beer was there. Another short 5 minute drive and I’m the first to buy. One man is behind me. That horrendous line never materialized. Why? Don’t know. Minnesotans certainly know about Darkness and mark its release date on their calendars but unlike some other special releases in other states (can you hear me Colorado? California?) there is plenty to go around. True, I was only allowed 1 bottle but wife Persimmon also bought one…and a good friend, who just happened to know a fella who ran a liquor store, was able to acquire 2.

So I left Minnesota a happy man; 1 bottle each to 2 sons, 2 bottles for my-own-self and 2 bottles shared with that special beer “mule.”

All of this is just to praise Surly Brewing and their incredible brews.

Akron, Ohio.

What’s in Akron, Ohio?

As we travel across and throughout these United States, wife Persimmon and I are visiting some amazing (and not so amazing) breweries and brewpubs. In Cleveland, we spent 2 days visiting the Rock & Roll Museum (and not seeing it all!) but decided to forego a trip to the most well known brewery, Great Lakes. You can find those beers everywhere.

However, we did make a detour into Akron, thanks to our son who popped a bottle of B.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer while we stayed in Denver.

Whoever made this beer, needs to be thanked personally.

So it matters not what’s in Akron for tourists. For us, it was only Hoppin’ Frog.

Only one word is applicable here; Wow!

Just Wow!

Small brewpub with a variety of unique and delicious food. Small-town atmosphere (it was the 1st night of the 2016 World Series & they were expected a crowd of Indian fans). The owner and brewer, Fred was conversing with the brew-master from Tool Brewing in Denmark who was in town to present some of his beers. This afternoon, we were (for a time) the only customers but were joined later by a party of 8. The weather was cool and crisp and the beer list was not crowded with IPA’s and Pale Ales. No, here stouts rule (B-odacious — O-atmeal — R-ussian — I-mperial — S-tout) and rule, they do.

There beer list includes rare bottles from as far back as 2008 to a draft list of a dozen that can be had in bottles from the nearby cooler.

“Can we have a taste of….?”

“Absolutely.” No questions asked. After a few, the charge was .50 cents per. But then, as most good owners know, they won’t lose a dime because they know…THEY KNOW…you will be ordering at least one full glass…or several small ones…which we did.

The Outta Kilter Scotch Red…T.O.R.I.S. (T–riple) the Tyrant…Karbinator Doppelbock…Sippin Into Darkness (a chocolate martini beer)…Infusion (peanut butter in a glass in collaboration with Cigar City)….InTENsity barley wine…there wasn’t a bad brew in the bunch. And then, we watch Fred open a bottle of rare B.O.R.I.S. aged in Pappy Van Wink whiskey cask for his Denmark colleague to enjoy…then offered it to the bartenders…who then offered us a taste!!

Nope. As a friend of mine once said: “there ain’t nothing wrong with that.”

How could you not when you’re sitting in one of the Top 100 Breweries in the World!

Hoppin’ Frog Fred, bartenders, patrons…there ain’t nothing wrong with what you’re doing.

My only complaint: I want one of these around every corner I visit.

Can you work on that?

It all started as a home brew. How many brewers today with million-dollar enterprises can say the same thing? Then, friends started insisting, “this is really good beer. You should open a brewery.”

So John MacDonald did…and now some 26 years later, it is the largest brewery in the mid-west shipping their product nation-wide.

This brewery is a monster, with separate production facilities and beer hall.

The other reviews here talk about the tour. If you haven’t ever done a brewery tour, you should…but don’t let that stop you from just sitting and sipping and watching the sun set over the Kansas City skyline. Enjoy the cheese or meat platter with a 6th Glass Quad (one of the very best made today!) or something special for the current season; a Funky pumpkin or Bob’s 47 Oktoberfest…but come back to the Quad! Or the bourbon barrel aged Quad. Or the tripel.

Yes, yes…I know…I’m prejudiced about my dark and heavy beers but they just satisfy.

We were disappointed in the customer service. I stood & waited for quite some time as one of the bartenders looked my way several times and decided the conversation with her co-worker at the end of the bar was more important…as was the woman behind me whom she decided should be served first.

But it was the only “hiccup” in the evening.

Still not ready to go? Take a stroll downstairs to the bottle shop & load up on your favorite…or favorites.

Take the tour….stay ’til closing (7:00 pm? I don’t know why.)…take a deep breath, relax and know that you’ll be enjoying one of the best brews available year-round.

And then raise your glass and say “thanks”

I did. Several times.
