It’s a brewpub, yes. It’s a distillery, yes. It’s a delight.
Oh my, yes.
Wife Persimmon, son Lewis and I were exploring Portland with the goal of finding a beer bar #1 son had visited before. We wanted to take pix of the harbor and as we walked, there…in front of us like a golden castle…was Liquid Riot.
Well, we HAD to go in.
Yes, we did.
And we found a delicious atmosphere to soothe a dreary soul on a rainy, cold Maine afternoon. Lots of dark wood, shuffleboard, pool, low music, good conversation….
But the beer?
Well, unfortunately the beer was not the best. A Belgian White Stout was offered which sounded delightful…but failed to impress. More of a Wheat with some subtle coffee under-tones, it did deliver on the promised vanilla flavor but at 5%, was too weak to be considered a stout.
But the service was agreeable and located right on the water, it’s easy to find and a good place to finish up a walk of downtown Portland and all its seaside character.
Next time (and yes, we’ll probably be back in a year) I would truly like to see a more varied tap menu with a coupla of darks (tripel, quad, barley wine) — something to signify that Liquid Riot knows its Fall and I do not…DO NOT…care to sup on yet another IPA.
