Wife Persimmon and I took over in August, 2016 to spend a year traveling around the country.

We had a few lists to assist us in our journey; Best Brewpubs in Every State, Best Under-rated Brewpubs in every State, Best Small Towns in Every State and Best “Hippie” Town in Every State.

So, when we go to New Hampshire in early November, we had to travel through Keene.

It was not what I would call a “hippie” town. Full of Wal-Marts and Wal-Greens and McDonald’s and Panera Breads (they’re getting to be everywhere…like Subway.)

It does have its own brewery however — although I have come to believe that you can find a brewery in every small burg across these united state.

Elm City operates in a downtown mall that appears to be losing clients. Several of the store fronts are empty, many moving on to what I assume, are cheaper environs in the city. This appears to be a modern mall, a renovated mill of some kind.

Elm City Brewing is the biggest client here with outdoor seating, a large inside and a half dozen beers on tap. The menu is basic brewpub fare although there are some interesting New England variations like a sweet potato and corn chowder soup.

The Baltic Porter was the darkest brew available and at 8%, it was robust & malty but nothing special. Some notes of coffee that disappeared quickly.

Opening at 11:30, by the time we left a bit after noon, the place was “jumping” so the locals apparently like what they eat and drink.

For us, it left something to be desired…character.
